Mumbai, the mightiest city of India. It is also called 'City of Dreams'. The name is apt for this dazzling metropolis that boasts of skyscrapers, beautiful beaches, and world-famous monuments. The city has changed significantly in recent years. Globalization has made Mumbai's economy mostly dependent on IT sectors like IT & ITES, BFSI (banks and financial services), Manufacturing Tech (IT equipment). For its contribution to the nation's economy, Mumbai was given the tag 'Boomtown'. The land surface area of Mumbai stands at around 407 square kilometers making it one of India's most populous metropolitan areas. The city is divided into wards. Each ward has a corporator, elected on its own. The mayor is elected on the basis of the number of legislators he has in the legislative assembly. Thus, Mumbai has 17 corporators in the legislative assembly. With this, Mumbai does not have a mayor unlike some other metropolises like Delhi & Chennai. The civic body, which deals with city's various utilities, is called Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC). The MMC was formed in 1873 and it came under state control in 1995. The parliamentary constituency of Mumbai is represented by 6 lawmakers. The Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) has 288 seats in total. Mumbai is connected to other parts of the country by rail, road and air transport. The city is served by a railway network that consists of 5 railway zones: the Western Railway, the Central Railway, the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour line and the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority). The city also has a good network of roadways that connect various parts of the metropolis with each other. There are many state highways that connect Mumbai to various places within Mumbai and beyond its limits fall in neighbouring states like Gujarat & Goa. The Air India Express flight connects Mumbai with Delhi & Chennai airports. Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is the busiest airport in the country. It is also ranked 9th in the world. It handles close to 45 million passengers & 1300 air traffic movements annually. The Mumbai International Airport, has 3 runways and it sprawls over an area of 3053 hectares. India's first ever metro line, the Mumbai Metro was inaugurated in June 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It covers a total distance of 29 kilometres out of which 11 are underground & 18 are elevated. The Metro has 16 stations, 13 of which are elevated & 3 are underground. The rail route becomes an O-shaped route when viewed from above, hence it is called 'O' MUMBAI'. The total cost of the project was ₹14,360cr. It is expected to carry 1.5 million passengers on a daily basis.
About the ‘Mumbai’ The city of Mumbai has been able to retain its name up to date, even though it has grown considerably in terms of size and population over the years. The first inhabitants were probably first humans who have migrated from Africa or Asia somewhere around 4000 BC. They were farmers who lived in small huts near the banks of river Yamuna and dried out their foodstuff under open sun for consumption during monsoon seasons.
